Family Movie Night

As Jesus followers, we talk a lot about knowing the importance of understanding and walking in our identity in Christ. Identity answers the question, “Who am I?” How we answer that critical question impacts how we view the world and how the world views us. There is another soul-shaping question that lingers deep in the heart of every child (and every child of God) that, when left unanswered, opens the door for the enemy to steal, kill, destroy, and distort not only relationships but identity and security. The heart longs to know, “Who wants me?” Of course, it is important for a child to know he or she is loved, and even liked, but neither tells a child that they belong. In a world where anxiety and depression tempt our children at every turn and isolation with screens invites the voices of strangers, ensuring the core need of belonging is met is central to building secure children.

So how do we meet the need for belonging? One way is to build A Family Identity! Family rhythms, habits, sayings, values, and traditions help to create belonging and say, “This is who WE are.” Studies show that something as simple as consistent family dinners build strong families and secure children.

Why?

Belonging.

As you prepare for summer, I want to share a fun and simple way to consider building a new tradition into your summer routine: Family Movie Night. Make this weekly rhythm both fun and purposeful!

As parents, we know our children are being influenced and impacted by what they watch. Children emulate what they see.  Remember, more is caught than taught! Take back the screens and use them to share great stories that build strong character and prompt important conversation.

Let’s start with a list of 50 Family Friendly Movies for you and your family to choose from. Remember to do your own research, make sure movies are age-appropriate for your children, and share topics and storylines that align with your own family values.

Need resources to help you research? Try these:

Make Family Movie Night FUN! Consider adding an unexpected twist to your family night. Creativity opens the door for lasting memories!

Theme Movie Night: Have everyone in the family dress up to represent the setting, decade, topic or character of the movie.

  • Build a snack bar! So FUN!

  • Take it outside. Watch the movie on an iPad by a fire pit or on the patio with blankets and hot chocolate.

  • Make space! Rearrange the room, add floor pillows or a mattress. Build a fort. Get creative.

  • Food of the Mood! Have dinner or snacks that match the theme of the movie.

  • Have a PJ party. PJ’s required for all!

Make Family Movie Night PURPOSEFUL! A fun and relaxed evening often opens doors and hearts for good conversation. Allow these movies to prompt purposeful conversation with intentional questions! Here are a few to get you started:

  • What did you like about the movie?

  • Was there anything you didn’t like about the movie? Why?

  • Who was your favorite character? Why?

  • Did any of the characters remind you of someone you know?

  • Did anything in the movie inspire you?

  • Did anything in the movie make you uncomfortable?

  • Would you recommend this movie to your friends?

  • How did the movie make you feel?

  • What is the best character quality you witnessed in the characters?

  • Rate this movie from 1-10 (10 being best)

You will be surprised by how much you learn about each other!

Take the time this summer to form family identity and build belonging. Be sure to use the words, “We / I WANT to spend time with you” as you plan family time. This small shift in language produces much fruit. Lastly, don’t let the rolled eyes or a lack of enthusiasm fool you. Kids will be kids. God has entrusted you with the formation of your family and children. Belonging WILL be met somewhere. There is no better place than home and no better way than family identity!  Enjoy!
